May Bank Holiday: Family Days out in the UK

Posted on April 28 2017

May bank holiday for the family

Easter chocolate may still be nestled in hidden spots around the house, but the next bank holiday is already hovering at the front of people’s minds. Thanks to Easter falling later than usual, it’s not long until we’ll be finding ourselves off for another three days.

With these bank holidays falling so close to one another, it can be tempting to make the most of one of the longer weekends and get away from it all for a day or two as a family. But with so many places to go, things to see, and activities to take part in, it can be difficult to know what to do. Luckily for you we’ve put our heads together and come up with some great ideas to help you make the most of that extra day off, and of course make lasting memories as a family.

Hit the beach

Us Brits love a sunny day. It means we can head to the coast, splash about in the sea, and build our beloved sandcastles. There’s plenty of great beaches to choose from that are suitable for the whole family. Weymouth Beach in Dorset, Fistral Beach in Newquay, Rhossili Bay in Rhossili, Wales, and Sandsend Beach in Yorkshire are considered just some of the best in the country, but there are of course plenty of other great beaches dotted around the country for you to visit for the day or night.

Visit a local stately home

We all have a local stately home. So why not make the most of being so close to history and visit a local stately home for the day? There’s bound to be lots of activities going on for kids over the holiday weekends, so by doing a bit of research, you’ll know exactly what to expect. And what’s more, if the weather does turn, you will all be kept nice and dry!

Have a picnic

Picnics are great. Having come back into fashion over the last few years, going on a picnic as a family is a great way to spend quality time together. All you need to do is choose a fab green area, pack up everyone’s favourite goodies, take a few games to play, and voila! You have the perfect day planned out for everyone.

Go to the zoo

Britain is home to some amazing zoos full of some of the most incredible animals to ever walk the planet. Bank holiday weekends are the perfect time to explore these furry places as they’ll be full of families all wanting to get up close and personal with zebras, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, meerkats, and almost any other animal you can think of. It’s always worth doing research as they can be quite costly for a large family however.

Have any of these given you a bit of inspiration for a family day out? Let us know what you’re up to! If you’re heading off on a long journey, don’t forget to check out our blog on: Packed Lunch Ideas for Day Trips
